Seniors Fail to progress

Miltown 0-7 Wolfe Tones na Sionna 2-6

Following their first round defeat to Shannon Gaels (1-12 to 0-9) this defeat has eliminated Miltown, for the second year in succession, at the group stages of the championship. In extremely poor conditions Graham Kelly open the scoring with a fine point after 7 minutes. Wolfe Tones then tagged on 4 points before a Joe Curtin free closed the gap to two. Miltown had loads of possession but they squandered a lot of it as the difficult conditions made it difficult to execute their long ball tactic. Micheal Malone, who had been introduced at the expense of Garry Egan only moments before, raced through the heart of the Wolfe Tones defence, played a nice one-two with Joe Curtin, but dragged his shot wide of the right hand post.
Conditions deteriorated significantly in the second half but Miltown again started well and began to close the gap. However with the score at 6 points to 5 in favour of Wolfe tones a speculative ball into the Miltown square was dropped by Niall Quinn and the umpire awarded a goal as he adjudged it to have crossed the line. This was a blow to the Miltown side but the rallied and had a chance to level the game when Brian Curtin was fouled in the box. Joe Curtin took responsibility for the spot kick and his low shot drew a good save from the Wolfe Tones goalie. Wolfe Tones sealed the game when Leahy score an excellent gaol with time running out.
Overall Miltown played well and had lots of possession but Wolfe Tones were much more efficient when they had the ball and took the opportunity's they created while Miltown's attack was disjointed and laboured throughout the game. Miltown also over relied on hand passing in the middle third of the pitch and in the poor conditions this led the an increase the handling errors. All in all a disappointing day!!
Miltown Team: Niall Quinn, Enda Malone, Kevin Burke, Peter Hennessy, Brian Curtin, Gordon Kelly, Michael Hehir, Graham Kelly, Sean Meade, Shane Curtin, Kevin Keavey, Michael Barry, Garry Egan, Michael Neylon, Joe Curtin. Subs: Micheal Malone for Garry Egan, Dessie Molohan for Michael Barry and Cathal Lafferty for Shane Curtin.

Miltown qualify for U21 final

Miltown 2-10 Corofin 0-9

2-5 from full forward Joe Curtin secured Miltown's place in the U21 B final. Corofin started well and the sides were evenly matched until Joe Curtin took advantage of confusion in the Corofin defence to fist his first goal. From then on Miltown were in charge with points from David Talty, Enda Fox and Curtin again. Miltown led 1-8 to 4 at half time.
Corofin had the better of the exchanges in the second half and narrowed the gap to 4 points. But Curtin goalled against the run of play to seal the game..

In an evenly contested game Miltown came out on the wrong side of a 1 goal defeat in Lissycasey. Miltown were level at half time 1-3 to 2-0 with Miltown's scores coming from Cian O'Malley and Niall Hehir. Miltown caused the home side huge problems when they attacked with Cormac Byrne and Sean Malone contributing greatly. In the second half Miltown battled hard with Padraic Murray in goal producing 2 fine saves, while, Diarmuid Meade, Rory Sexton and Colin Hehir defended well. However Miltown's luck was out as SeamMalone had a goal disallowed mid way through the second half which could have sealed the match.

Minors first win

Miltown 1-9 Ennistymon 0-5

Following their loss in the first round of the minor championship to Eire Og, Miltown sealed their first win by defeating a lacklustre Ennistymon side in Miltown. Miltown were very wasteful in the first half and led by only 2 at half time 5 -3. Ten minutes into the second half Seanie Malone was fouled 30 yards from goal, he took the free quickly which released Enda Fox who scored with a good low shot. Miltown cruised home from here with scores from Micheal Malone, Joe Curtin and Fox again.
Ennistymon were short 5 regular players and this was very evident from their play, particularly in the second half.

Senior Management

The Senior Management team for 08 will be introduced to the players tonight prior to the first training session of the new year. Michael "Malty" McDonagh will manage the team with Ml. Murray training them for the new season. They will be joined by TJ Flynn and possibly one other candidate who is yet to be confirmed.

On the player front, Alan Sexton has moved to Moy. It is disappointing to see Alan go as he has played well at Senior level for the club in the past. Last year was a disaster for him as the missed most of the season with a broken ankle. We wish Alan well with Moy in the future.

McGrath Cup win for Clare

Clare 0-9 UCC 0-4 @ Hennessy Park, Miltown Malbay.

Clare secured their first win under Frank Doherty and their first win in the McGrath Cup since 2005, with a good display against UCC on Sunday. Clare dominated possession and should have won by quite a bit more. On the whole it was a really positive coherent display by Clare.

Gordon Kelly was Miltown's sole representative on the Clare side and acquitted himself really well. Gordon has proved himself to be one of Clare's most consistent performers in the last 2 years and everyone at St.Joseph's wishes him the best for 2008 with Clare.

Clare play University of Limerick, who overcame Waterford in the previous round, in the 1/4 final on Cooraclare on Sunday at 2.

AGM Report

A good crowd gathered at Pairc MacAonghusa on the 6th of January last for the St.Joseph’s Miltown Malbay AGM. It was an up beat meeting following the success of 2007. The highlights, outlined by Secretary Maeve McKenna, from the previous year were the capture of the Senior B and under 14 Feile na nOg in men’s and the Minor, Senior League and Junior Championship at Ladies level. Treasurer Frances McMahon reported a profit of just short of €2000, with the Lotto and Club Membership the main revenue generating initiatives.
An Cathaoirleach, Maurice Reidy, in his first address to the AGM, thanked the players and coaches for their participation in 2007. He asked for greater focus from the senior team for 2008 with a view to regaining the Senior title, which has eluded the club since 1990. He also said that Martin Flynn, the new minor manager, would have to be supported fully, if the Minor A title was to be brought back to the club for the first time since 1961, a gap which he felt was unacceptable for a club of St. Joseph’s stature.
The following officers were elected: President: Very Rev. Canon Seamus Mullin, Vice Presidents: Martin Marrinan & Aidan Carroll. Chairman: Maurice Reidy, Secretary: Maeve McKenna, Treasurer: Frances McMahon, Vice Chairman: Shane O’Connell, Asst. Secretary: Willie Healy, Registrar: John Meade, County Board Rep: Noel Walsh, Field Co-ordinator: Ml O’Loughlin, PRO: Sean O’Brien.
Numerous speakers paid tribute to former County Board Chairman, Ml. McDonagh, on the great work he did while in office and on the prestige he had brought to St.Joseph’s by his actions.
There were 3 motions from the floor which were passed unanimously. It was agreed that a sub-committee would be formed by John Reidy to build a stand in 2008. Following his investigations, John told the meeting that this would cost between €100,000 and €120,000. The club also agreed to investigate the provision of extra training grounds, as the level of use on the current pitch was causing training sessions to be cancelled due to congestion. Finally, it was agreed that the club would write to the county board, in relation to the proposal from the Department of the Environment regarding the future planning & development in rural Ireland’s small towns and villages and the impact this could have on clubs and the wider community in these areas.
