Munster Intermediate Final

Miltown 0 -7  Clyda Rovers 0 - 10

Miltown's 2013 campaign ended with defeat in the Munster Intermediate Final to Clyda Rovers from Cork in the Gaelic Grounds on Saturday in a game played in ideal conditions in front of an official attendance of 1,010
Miltown got off to the perfect start and were four points up after only six minutes with scores from Conor Cleary (2),Eoin Cleary and Eoin Curtin giving the large Miltown support hope of a first Munster crown.
Clyda however gained a foothold and their possession based game though very unattractive proved effective and by the end of the first quarter they were on level terms with Miltown finding it very hard to get their hands on the ball.
At the halftime whistle Clyda had a two point lead on a scoreline of six points to four and were dominant in a lot of positions.Miltown introduced Micheal Malone at half time but unfortunately Clyda still maintained a stranglehold on possession and Miltown found scores very hard to come by,it was only as the final whistle approached that they tagged on three points from Eoin Cleary (2) and Eoin Curtin. All hopes then rested on a goal but unfortunately Clyda shut up shop and held on to win the game.

Munster Intermediate championship

Miltown 1-8 Currow 1-7

On a cold wet afternoon in the famous Hennessy Park Miltown lit up the Munster Intermediate championship with an historic victory over Kerry champions Currow to record a first victory by a Clare club over Kerry opposition in this competition.
The foundations for the victory were laid in a very impressive first half display which meant Miltown held a half time lead of  6 points 3 with scores from Eoin Cleary (2) Darragh Mc Donagh (2),Seanie Malone and Conor Cleary. The dismissal of Paudie Collins just before half time seemed to galvanise the Currow team who cut the gap to the minimum early in the second half before a Kevin Keavey point settled Miltown.
The decisive score for Miltown a goal from Gordon Kelly following great work from Eoin Cleary re-established a five point lead and a Micheal Malone point seemed to put the hosts in control.
Currow showed their battling qualities and a lucky goal brought them right back into the game. With minutes remaining there was only the bare minimum between the teams, but with Miltown showing great composure and a colossal work rate there was only going to be one winner.
The final whistle was greeted with scenes of great celebration as another page was added to the illustrious history of Miltown St.Josephs.Great credit must be given to the players and management who have worked so hard and played so well after the disappointment of last year and brought us to our first Munster final

Munster Intermediate Championship

Miltown face the Kerry champions Currow in Miltown at 2pm on Sunday.
So here is a brief history of our opponents.

Currow GAA Club was founded in 1911 when Currow Wolfe Tones and Currans who were two existing teams in the parish of Killentierna joined together. This amalgamation was the origin of how Currow got its team colours of black & amber - one team wore black and the other team wore amber.
Currow were one of the founding clubs when the East Kerry Board was formed in 1925 and Currow participated in East Kerry and the Castleisland District League at various times over the next number of years. The club continued to grow in strength and in 1928 Currow participated in the Senior County championship where they lost to a more experienced Strand Road team.
In 1982 the club won its first county title defeating near neighbours Scartaglen to win the Novice Championship & in 1983 the club opened its redeveloped pitch and new dressing rooms. In 1988 the club won its second county title, the Junior Championship defeating Rathmore and the club contested its first Intermediate Championship final in 1997 but lost out to Kilcummin. The club won its first & only East Kerry Championship O’Donoghue Cup in 1998 defeating Glenflesk, avenging the loss of the previous year’s final at the hands of the same opposition. Currow also lost the 1992 O’Donoghue Cup final by the narrowest of margins to Dr. Crokes in a classic.
2007 saw the launch of the official club crest with the design representing the three bridges that span the Brown Flesk River as it flows through the three villages of the parish - Currow, Currans and Kilsarcon. The hurling sticks on the crest represent the various camogie and hurling teams that existed at various stages in the clubs history.
The club's centenary year of 2011 saw the official opening of new dressing rooms, sand-based pitch, new stand & electronic scoreboard, marvellous facilities which are a great credit to the club & the people of the parish.
The senior team currently lie in second place in Div. 2 of the county league & a win in the final round would see a return to the top flight.

Munster Intermediate Championship

Miltown 3-11 St.Marys Sean Finns 0-7

Making their first appearance in the Munster Club Championship for twenty three years Miltown began their Intermediate provincial campaign with a comprehensive victory over Limerick champions St.Marys Sean Finns from Rathkeale in the Gaelic Grounds on Sunday.

After a slow start Miltown burst into life with two goals in quick succession from Seanie Malone and Gearoid Curtin to lay the foundations for a highly impressive performance which gave Miltown a ten point lead at the break.

St Marys attempts at a comeback at the start of the second half were quickly snuffed out by the Miltown defence with Enda O'Gorman in fine form. With midfield dominance from Conor Cleary and Darragh Mc Donagh giving the forwards plenty of quality possession Miltown turned on the power and Brian Curtins 48th minute goal killed off any hopes of a St Marys revival.

Next up for Miltown is a home game versus Currow from Kerry on Sunday at 2pm.

Intermediate Football

Intermediate Final

All roads lead to to Cooraclare this Saturday at 3.30pm where Miltown will seek a quick return to the top table of Clare football when they take on last years beaten finalists Kilmhil.
Miltown are unbeaten in the competition to date with victories over Kildysart,Clarecastle and Kilmurray Ibrickane in the group stages before overcoming the challenge of a very physical Corofin side in the semi final.
This Miltown team, with the Kelly brothers, Enda Malone along with Brian & Eoin Curtin bringing a wealth of experience to the fold ably supported by the youthful  Clearys and Curtins will be well tested by a strong Kilmihil outfit who were unlucky to lose last years decider. We hope our superior scoring power will see us over the line and bring us back to where we belong in Senior ranks.
We encourage all Miltown supporters to make the trip and give the lads all the support we can.Lets make this a day to remember.

U21 CHAMPIONSHIP

Miltown 1-13 Lissycasey 2-6

Less than 24 hours after Clares' epic win in Croke Park the the Miltown U21 team showed little signs of any after effects from the county wide celebrations when they brushed aside the challenge of Lissycasey in a quarter final tie in Kilmihl. Playing against a stiff breeze Miltown started the game well and led by 1-7 to 1-3 at half time with Miltowns goal coming from the lively Seanie Malone.Lissycasey were fortunate to be as close after scoring a very lucky goal just before the interval.
The second half was a tighter affair with a Miltown goal that seemed to hit the back stantion and rebound back into play not being awarded, that and a very soft Lissycasey penalty meant the game went down to the wire.

With the game over by half time Miltown nonetheless came out for the second period determined to maintain their momentum and added another 3-4 to an already impressive scoreline.

Intermediate Championship

Miltown 2 - 11 Clarecastle 0-7

Miltown continued their quest for an immediate return to the senior ranks of Clare football with a hard fought victory over last years Junior A champions Clarecastle in Kilmihil on Sunday.
Miltown started the game nervously and found scores hard to come by in the opening half against a well organised Clarecastle defence, indeed but for a Joe Curtin goal the scoreboard would not have made for very pleasant reading for the Miltown faithful in attendence.
Miltown upped their performance in the second half and kept the scoreboard ticking over at a better rate ,while limiting their opponents to two points. The only black mark of the second half was the straight red shown to Miltown sub Micheal Malone near the end of the game.
Next up for Miltown is a meeting with the intermediate team of near neighbours KIB on friday night in Cooraclare at 7.45pm

U14 Championship

Miltown 1-11 Lissycasey 6-11

Miltown U14s continued their long season with a visit to Lissycasey on Monday evening.
Goals proved to be the difference between the sides in the end.despite some excellent saves from Captain James Clancy who also impressed with he's kickouts. The first half was a close affair with Lissycasey going in at the break leading on a scoreline of 3-4 to Miltown's 9 points.
Playing against the breeze in the second half a physically smaller Miltown side showed great fighting spirit and controlled the game for long periods but eventually succumbed to the hosts ability to score goals .

Junior Championship

Coolmeen 1-11 Miltown 1-3

Miltown suffered an eight point defeat against a very impressive Coolmeen side in Cooraclare on Saturday evening in the second group game of the Junior  A championship. An early Coolmeen goal set the tone for what was a difficult first half for the Miltown lads who trailed by 1-7 to 1 point at halftime ,Miltown's score coming from the boot of Gerard Malone from play.
The second half showed a much improved performance from Miltown and indeed but for a controversially disallowed goal midway through the half things would have been a lot tighter at the end. Two more Gerard Malone points and a scrambled goal accounted for Miltown's scores.
Next up is a make or break game against near neighbours Ennistymon who defeated Clonlara at the weekend.

Junior Championship

Miltown 3-15 Clonlara 0-2

Miltown began their Junior A championship with a comfortable victory over an understrength Clonlara side on Sunday in Gurteen.Much like the intermediate game the previous evening Miltown began with an early goal from Michael Barry but struggled for scores for the rest of the half despite being well on top in open play. The halftime scoreline of 1-5 to 0-1 did not reflect the dominance of the Miltown side.
Miltown superiority really began to show in the second half and the scoreboard operator was a lot busier as the scores began to flow.Goals from Enda Fox and Colm Haugh and points from a spread of players ensured Miltown ran out easy winners on the day ,but they will face much sterner tests in the next two games against Coolmeen and Ennistymon

The second half was a more enteraining affair with some fine scores from a Miltown side who were in a more clinical mood and playing some good football in patches.Scores from Seanie Malone,Conor Cleary (2) Eoin Cleary,Darragh Mc Donagh and Micheal Malone guided Miltown to victory on a scoreline of 1-9 to 6 points.

Minors Win

Miltown 4-17 N.Eoin\O'Currys 2-10

Miltown got their minor championship campaign back on track on Wednesday evening in Miltown with a comprehensive victory over their opponents from the peninsula. In an open exciting game played in perfect conditions Miltown led 2-8 to 5 points at half time and despite a brief N'Eoin\O'Currys rally at the start of the second half Miltown pulled away to record a first victory of the campaign in their second outing.
The return of county minor Kieran Malone from injury was a boost to the side and he was prominent throughout.

Barry took charge of the first round game between Tipperary and one of the two Cork sides. He followed this by officiating in the shield semi final between Cork and Limerick. To cap off a great day, Barry was given the honour of being the man in the middle for the Munster final between Tipperary and S.Kerry.After two matches played in sweltering heat Barry showed his fitness and played his part in an exciting final eventually won by the Kingdom.Hopefully this tournament will mark the beginning of a long and successful career for Barry on the provincial and national scene in years to come.Roll on Croke Park!!!
Umpires for the day were Tara Rynne,Maurice Reidy,Sean Ryan and Michael Howe.

Miltown's other Referee Niall Quinn is also making his mark on the local scene in only his second season as an official and we wish both lads all the best.

U14 Championship

Miltown 2 - 9 N.Eoin\O'Currys 4 - 18

Miltown U14s fell to their first defeat of the championship on Monday evening in Cross against a very strong peninsular amalgamation.Trailing 3-11 to 2-1 after a disappointing first half Miltown turned in a very impressive second half performance to stage a gallant fightback which unfortunately fell short. The difference in physicality between the sides proved too much for Miltown's young side most of whom will be underage again next year.

Girl’s U-14 Division 2 final
The U-14 division 2 girl’s final was a closely contested game played between Miltown Malbay and Liscannor at Ennistymon field Thursday 27th June. The game was played in near perfect conditions and was quite an entertaining affair throughout. Liscannor had the better of the opening exchanges and led 1-4 to 0-0 by the tenth minute of the game, with Meg Brennan the top scorer for the North Clare girls.
However, Miltown began to kick into gear following these opening ten minutes and Eimear Keane opened the St. Joseph’s girls account with a well taken goal. The rest of the half was nip and tuck with the team’s level at half time; Miltown Malbay’s 2-4 to Liscannor’s 1-7.
Miltown Malbay began the second half with a breeze at their backs, and they utilised the conditions to open with an Aine Keane goal followed by two well taken points from corner forward Laura Keane.
The Liscannor girls battled against the breeze and went into the final stages of the game trailing by just two points, resulting from great scores by Meg Brennan and Sinead Hogan. The Miltown Malbay girls managed to pull through with points from Aoife Hehir and Grainne Meade and finish the game victorious on a scoreline of 3-7 to 1-9.
Miltown Malbay were led by their joint captains Ciara O’Sullivan and Brid Hayes, who played outstanding roles at full and centre-back respectively. Liscannor captain Elaine Shannon played a pivotal role for Liscannor along with Meg Brennan.
The cup was presented to the Miltown Malbay joint captains by county secretary, James Laffety, to a rapturous applause from the St. Joseph’s girls. The cup will be displayed at the team sponsor’s new store, Jones SuperValu on the Ennis Road, Miltown Malbay.

Minor Championship Opener

Miltown 1 - 10 Cooraclare 3 - 9

As the old saying goes ,goals win games and this was certainly the case in Cooraclare on Wednesday evening as the Miltown minors went down to an opening day defeat in the Minor Championship.Despite playing very well in the first half Miltown found themselves behind by four points on a score line of 1 - 6 to 5 points ,Miltowns scores coming from Sean Malone (4) and Cormac Murray.
Miltown upped their game in the second half and a Martin Mongon goal brought them right back in to the game ,unfortunately two Cooraclare goals eventually put an end to Miltowns hopes, however this very young side never gave up and battled to the final whistle.Sean Malone (4) and Enda McGuane got Miltown's points in the second half.

Brian Casey Tournament.

Miltown took part in the Brian Casey Memorial 7 a side tournament in Lissycasey on Sunday last.
Playing in unusually warm conditions Miltown suffered defeats to the host club and Shannon Gaels before finishing off the campaign with victory over Coolmeen. Miltown referee Barry Kelly lent his considerable experience to the team when not officiating on a busy day for him.
Pictured below are the Miltown squad and management, one of whom obviously forgot to wear his management shades.

GAA Gathering

The recent GAA gathering event for St.Josephs Miltown proved to be a resounding success with a large crowd turning out at both the Clare v Galway game at Hennessy Park and the subsequent Social Gathering at the Community Centre. The event proved to be a great attraction for former players, mentors and officials of the club who returned from all over Ireland, the UK and the USA.
A great night of music and memories was had by all, as old friends and teamates were reunited, games relived and stories told.
The highlight of the night was the launch of a book written and edited by local man John Reidy who has been involved in Miltown GAA all his life.  "A Story of St.Joseph's GAA Club” chronicles in great detail the history of the club from its foundation to the present day and covers all the great victories for the club at both adult and juvenile level over the years. This extensively researched and well written book will surely become a great source of pleasure and the main reference point for anyone interested in the history of football in Clare for years to come.
Copies of the book are still available from the club. Anyone interested in getting their hands on a copy should contact John on (087) 2333621
